The Department of Health have Announced a Day Surgery Change

The DOH have announced that they have some radical plans lined up. They are going to shake up day surgery across the north of Ireland. Thousands of operations will be transferred to sites known as day case hubs and these are going to offer a huge range of specialities. These hubs have actually been in operation since last October and they are carrying out all of the planned surgeries for those who suffer from varicose veins or even cataracts.

The latest rollout is going to be the next stage in the process and they have stated that the specialities are now going to be offered at the elective care centre. This includes general surgery, endoscopies and even gynaecology appointments. New and even established groups are going to be taking place and even the DOH have stated that the work is going to help them to inform a regional model.

The department is going to aim to try and transfer more than 100,000 day cases and even 8,000 procedures to the new model. They are aiming to have all of this done by the year 2020. All too often, routine surgery needs to be postponed and the main reason for this is because theatres are needed to handle emergency or even urgent care cases. They want to try and create a day surgery hub for any stand-alone sites and they also want to give support to those who have to attend a 24-hour emergency department. This is interesting for those who work in homecare, or even private nursing.

Tom Black has welcomed the plans and he has stated that they really are inevitable. This comes from a lot of frustration regarding positive change over the last couple of years. He has stated that hopefully these plans will help people to start getting the help and support that they need.
