If you are well-versed in homecare or if you currently have a job in private nursing then you will know how important it is to make sure that staff are given the support they need. If staff are not supported then this means that they cannot do their job properly and it is usually the patients who need up suffering. The RCN are now calling on the UK government to see if they can urgently look at the shortage of nurses in the industry right now.
The Covid-19 pandemic really has highlighted and boosted the pressure that nursing staff are under. It doesn’t matter whether they work in care homes, in the community or even across the wider healthcare industry because at the end of the day, the entire sector is struggling.
Nursing is a critical industry and staff have had to be redeployed or even stopped from progressing with their studies as well. Right now, the staffing situation is somewhat untenable with the profession facing major shortages right now. In fact, some believe that there are going to be well over 50,000 shortages in the NHS when you look at the UK alone. There are fears over stress, patient complexity and even safety, not to mention that the amount of staff members who have had to take breaks has worsened even more.
Unless the government in the UK are able to act right now, there is a major risk of the health and the wellbeing of those who are part of the industry. Those who are contributing their lives to care are also going to end up being harmed as well and this is going to really harm everyone involved.
The RCN are calling upon the government to see if they can invest in the training of nurses and to find out if they can try and give more support to those who need it.
