Elderly people could now be protected under a new law regarding hate crime. This comes as a wide-ranging review. The legal body has been instructed by Sajid Javid and their goal is to try and look at how the legislation could be far more effective if certain measures were taken. Some of the categories that are under this right now include race, religion, sexual orientation and even disability. Of course, action or even elder abuse does estimate that there are around one million people who are subject to abuse every single year and this is a shocking statistic to say the least. Of course, if you work in homecare or even in private nursing then you will understand this more than anyone. There are a number of convictions that happen even to this day and when someone is found to be guilty, they are usually able to escape through various loopholes. On top of this, they are also given sentences that are flimsy as well.
When you look at the commission’s review, you will also see that there is a nationwide campaign and that this is going to be launched to try and educate those who need to know about hate crime even more. The home secretary has stated that hate crime is going to go against the long-standing British values that revolve around tolerance, mutual respect and unity. They are completely committed to trying to stamp out this type of behaviour once and for all and once the new plan is set out, it will then be much easier to try and make sure that offenders are able to face the full extent of the law. Of course, it’s hard to see if this is going to come into full force or not, but at the end of the day only time will tell.
