Care Workers Exhausted as the result of a Staff Shortages

Those who work in carer jobs or even homecare jobs will understand how exhausting it can be. A care worker who lives in Northern Ireland has stated that she feels like a workhorse and this is all down to the staff shortage.

She has to work 80 hours a week in some instances and her comments come from an interview done by the BBC. It has been revealed this week that on one day of the month, over 88 people had to stay in hospital without any good reason and this is because they had to wait for a home care package.

The Department of Health has stated that the demand for this has risen considerably and that it is currently being evaluated so that new measures can be put into place. The BBC have also revealed that one of the longest ever waits for a patient to get a home care package that was suitable for their needs was well over 1 months. The Southern Health Trust have stated that it is highly unusual for this to happen and that this was because they needed a specialist care package.

The second longest wait was 104 days and the average waiting time for those who work across the five health trusts is 26 days. A help worker, who wants to remain anonymous, has told the BBC that over 37 house calls were made in 17 hours at one point and that this is not unusual at all.

This can lead to people being both physically and mentally exhausted because you are not only meeting the long hours that are put in front of you, because you are also having to deal with the extra bits that are required of you by patients.
