The Government Nursing Plan Isn’t Going Far Enough

The RCN are welcoming extra funding so that they can increase the number of apprenticeships to over 2,000 per year but they are saying now that more needs to be done so that they can achieve the 50,000 new nursing staff that have been promised by the Prime Minister. Extra government funding isn’t going far enough and the Department for Health and Social Care have announced that healthcare employers are going to be incentivised to take on the move. At the same time, they have reiterated that there needs to be an end to the self-funded tuition fees and that universal maintenance grants need to be filled out so that thousands of vacancies can be filled.

If you work as part of an doctor recruitment agency or if you want to find out more about locum jobs then you will know that the country is now in a recession and that more needs to be done in order to give people the support they need. Mike Adams, who is the RCN Nursing Director for England has stated that there is in fact an increase in the number of places but at the end of the day, more incentives need to be given to those who are in fact fortunate enough to secure a place. The full-time nursing degree happens to be the best way to try and increase the domestic nursing supply and this needs to be done at the right scale and pace. The government have to make sure that they abolish the self-funded fees that are associated with nursing students and they also have to make sure that they introduce a living grant as well. This will reflect the student needs and it will also make it much easier for the government to deliver the nurses that they have in fact promised.
