It’s safe to say that the image of a nurse is an invincible healer. They act as an invincible healer for the whole population during the flu pandemic of 1918. British nurses donned themselves with veils and presented themselves as being military heroines. Evidence from the media, which includes journals, novels and even newspapers all show that people were genuinely motivated by these exemplars of hope and they were also able to practice a form of collective resistance too. It’s important to know that the same concept applies to this day and age too. Those who work in hospital jobs or even as part of an GP recruitment agency really have gone to show that they are as valuable now as ever. The calm and courageous image of the twentieth-century nurse has carried over today and this is great to say the least.

The RCN are welcoming extra funding so that they can increase the number of apprenticeships to over 2,000 per year but they are saying now that more needs to be done so that they can achieve the 50,000 new nursing staff that have been promised by the Prime Minister. Extra government funding isn’t going far enough and the Department for Health and Social Care have announced that healthcare employers are going to be incentivised to take on the move. At the same time, they have reiterated that there needs to be an end to the self-funded tuition fees and that universal maintenance grants need to be filled out so that thousands of vacancies can be filled.
